The Los Angeles Sol of the Women's Professional Soccer League (WPS) kicked off the league's inaugural season on March 29, 2009 at the Home Depot Center to a crowd of nearly 15,000 fans. The team's roster is compiled of women's national team players and international stars from across the globe. U.S. Women's National Team players and 2008 Olympic Gold Medalists Shannon Boxx, Stephanie Cox, and Aly Wagner create a strong nucleus for the team in its first season of play. Also to join the Sol are international players including three time FIFA Player of the Year and Brazilian sensation, Marta Vieira da Silva, more commonly known simply as Marta. Other international players include Han Duan of China, Aya Miyama of Japan, Johanna Frisk of Sweden, and Camille Abily of France. Karina LeBlanc, Christie Welsh, Kendall Fletcher, and Manya Makoski were also added during the general draft. The Sol are led by head coach Abner Rogers, formerly the President and Director of Coaching at the Laguna Hills Soccer Club Eclipse.
