School
Visits
The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation and Urban Born jointly organized
a surprise visit to Curtiss Glen Hammond Middle School in Carson on November
22, 2005. During the visit, Johnel Langerston, president and founder of Urban
Born conducted an educational multimedia seminar with a powerful message for
the students. Langerston uses his intense personal story as a former federal
drug inmate and gripping documentary-style video footage to teach kids "It's
easier to catch on now, than to catch up later." The presentation also
featured guest appearances by Lil' Romeo (picture by Andre Gladden) and his
father Master P. The seminar culminated with an award for the students presented
to their principle, Dr. William Elkins.
The Home Depot Center Charitable Foundation's Carson Middle School Visits

figures and celebrities. On the eve of the 47th annual Grammy Awards, hip hop
superstar Kanye West unveiled the painting "A Life Restored" by
renowned artist Ernie Barnes – which depicts his profound near-death
experience from a car accident in late 2002 and became the inspiration behind
his debut hit single, "Through the Wire."
Along with the Carson Middle School Visits. Ernie Barnes was honored at the "Tribute
to Ernie Barnes" event on February 12, 2004, presented by The Home Depot
Center Charitable Foundation at the Home Depot Center Stadium Club in Carson,
CA. The celebrity event included a rare exhibition of new work by the artist,
and book signing for From Pads to Palette.
